News Values
1) Come up with a news story from the last 12 months for each of the categories suggested by Harriss, Leiter and Johnson:
- Conflict - Tension or surprise
- Progress - Triumph or achievement
- Disaster - Defeat or destruction
- Consequence - Effects on individuals or community
- Prominence - The well-known or famous
- Novelty - The unusual or emotional
The story they used was "British servicewomen died after afghan bomb blast". it is quite negative and local and therefore it may attract an audience.
3) What is gate keeping?
Gate keeping is the process of filtering information prior to dissemination. This process is usually done via the editor, but the gate keeping process could be seen to be more than simply an editor choosing one story over another, it could also refer to how journalist select certain lines of questioning, or use some words over others to describe people and event. In general, gate keeping is about opening or closing the channels of communication and, in the case of news, it is a way for news institution to control the ‘flow’ of information passed on to the audience.
4) What are the six ways bias can be created in news?
- Bias through selection and omission
- Bias through placement
- Bias by headline
- Bias by photos, captions and camera angles
- Bias through the use of names and titles
- Bias by choice of words
5) How have online sources such as Twitter, bloggers or Wikileaks changed the way news is selected and published?
These sources offers a way for audiences to access news stories that may have been mediated or censored prior to being reported. The fact that Wikileaks only publishes raw material bypasses news values, however, this information is passed on to news institutions who will use the information for their own news agenda. It is unlikely mass audiences or casual news consumers will look closely at the Wikileaks data as a source of everyday news.
6) Complete the task on the last page of the Fact sheet regarding Sky News and Twitter:
- What does this reveal about how Sky views Twitter as a news source? They are reliable and usually get the information
- What does it say about how news is being produced? It is produced from the data from twitter where people are going to twitter to share their experiences.
- What role does the audience have in this process?
- Why might this be a problem for journalistic standards? It is a problem for them as it is going to be harder to obtain news from people that have important information. Also, those people can instantly send their information to twitter so it is hard to compete with them.
Personally, i think it has changed it a little bit because of the changing of technology and how quickly we are able to access news through various ways. But it has also stayed the same as some of the news values can still be applied even though news is being distributed differently.
8) How would you update them for 2018? Choose TWO of Galtung and Ruge's news values and say how they have been affected by the growth of digital technology.
The two news values i would choose is balance and visual impact. I think there isn't much balance due to the media and most of the post are becoming more and more negative because people are attracted to it. There isn't really any nice stories and therefore there isn't much balance. This is because it is so easy to publish news stories through social media. Visual impact has been affected in a good way. This is because people have the chance to upload pictures because they have a camera on them. Because it is is a good quality camera, it can attract more people etc. There will also be more pictures and this is called citizen journalism.
