What are the arguments for and against statutory regulation of the newspaper industry?
Statutory Regulation of the newspaper industry is the idea that is highly debated of whether or not the news should be regulated and the status of which how much it should be regulated. This is a highly debated topic as many people believe that if the government were given the power to chose what was shown corruption would be ablaze in the news and day to day lives of the people yet if the control is only given to the editors and publishers it would mean anything could be published with unlimited control it could lead to news stories being made that are an invasion of privacy.
One of the large debate for statutory regulation in the news is that boundaries can be set, which would mean that these news companies cannot go to wherever they want and choose to publish who or what so ever that there are limits to how news can be obtained. With a history of the industry already publishing and exploring stories in inhumane acts with the news of the world scandal which thankfully led to its closure. As for any industry, there are limits and rules which are followed like they are human nature so it is no different to the print news industry.
While there is a convincing debate for statutory regulation there is a voice on the other end that argues that without press freedom there would be corrupt politicians if the press is not able to function freely as well as a free press is essential to the society as it informs and educates the people with different views. Political corruptness will begin as the politicians can hide their acts and can conduct whatever they want in a blind eye as has North Korea which does not publish local news within the country.
Celebrities also come into the debate with heavy influence on why statutory regulation is needed within the industry due to their privacy being invaded as well as the public's privacy. As news regarding the high class and elites is what a lot of readers look for which is why journalists go to extreme lengths to find out the next scoop about them, and this invasion of privacy is a huge point that people raise when the press chooses to do this.
The company IPSO has been regulating the news for quite a while and they are responsible for making sure that whatever the newspapers publish is okay to distribute. The IPSO have not been doing a good job as there have been numerous times where the newspapers publish inaccurate content and the IPSO have not done much about it. They have been given numerous opportunities and chances to change this but they have failed to do it successfully. As a result, I believe that there should be statutory regulation because of this. Some newspaper industries are regulating themselves which suggests that the content can be unreliable. This makes me consider that newspapers may only be interested in how much they sell instead of the ethics and what they actually sell.
Overall, I wholeheartedly think that there should not be statutory regulation as believe that the government will have too much of an influence on us. However, this depends on whether how much the government is willing to regulate as if they aren’t regulating much, the news can still be interesting and appealing to other audiences, it is important that the government are not too controlling as otherwise a sense of brainwashing may occur as everything we receive will be passed through the government and therefore dictate what we see and what they government want us to see. And as the general audiences don't want the news to be biased it is very important for the future of journalism that there should not be statutory regulation.
