Media Magazine Article and Questions

1) Keith Perch used to edit the Leicester Mercury. How many staff did it have at its peak and where does Perch see the paper in 10 years' time?

At the peak of the companies time it had 130 journalists employed however this is very different today and Perch predicts that in 10 years that journalism will become exclusively weekly, with low circulation and will cost a lot of money and this is only if the print media is able to survive the 10 years therefore is completely hypothetical and therefore all news stories will be consumed through social media such as twitter Facebook and Instagram

2) How does Perch view the phone hacking scandal?

Perch believes that this scandal was so mainstream that it was not dealt with effectively leading to many getting away with it with a few getting caught and shut down like news of the world. He believes that there should have been more legal action done to all the newspapers involved rather than just passing a law.3) What does IPSO stand for and how does it work?

IPSO stands for Independent Press Standards Organisation and it works towards helping regulate the news and upholding the Editors code of practice. They ensure that news stories are kept to standard.

4) What is Perch's view of newspaper ownership?

He believes that readers are the ones in control and are responsible for the content they chose to consume, he also thinks however that the newspapers should be as unbiased as they possibly can be, this is due to his view on regulation and how this would be much simpler under one view given to the general public therefore a consensus of what the media will be given to prove all data to be fair.

5) Do you agree with his view that broadcast news should have less regulation so that TV channels can support particular political parties or people?

I personally believe that the news should have less regulation so that audiences become active meaning they can chose to listen to different view points and figures to digest different outlets of news, therefore giving the public a more consumer controlled experience rather than everything being hand fed to them.
