Audience Theory 2

1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence?

I personally believe that the main reason for anti-social behaviour is influenced by media to an extent as for example when younger children play or watch very violent scenes frequently they may begin to believe that this is normal and therefore cause them to have a different outtake as to what is right and what is wrong therefore meaning to them doing wrongful acts and them believing it is correct to do. The Bandura Theory may suggest that the media does influence the views and attitudes of the audience, with convincing evidence this does not prove the fact that the media has had or has not had a direct correlation to anti-social behaviour.

2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples.

I think that there are clear links between this theory and relevance to today's day and age therefore some may argue modern day audiences understand what right and whats wrong to a better extent. however with many recent events of copycat killings happening more frequently this leads to a clear indication of how audiences, especially of the younger audience are more vulnerable to being influenced by the media therefore causing them to change their outtake and perceptive on certain events.

3) Research five examples of moral panic from the last 50 years. To what extent was the media responsible for these moral panics? Was the concern in society justified? How have things changed as a result of these moral panics?

The Zodiac killing was a large number of killings revolved around a newspaper agency that had publicised the codes that the Zodiac killer had sent to them, this had resulted in large amounts of panic in the cites. The media was held responsible for publicising the incidents and causing the public to become involved even if they had good intentions.

4) Read this introduction to an academic paper on technopanics. What examples are given of technopanics that create fear in society?

Digital Footprints, Online Child Safety and Cyber Security

5) How does the author suggest that technopanics should be addressed - rather than through government regulation?

I think that internet should not be regulated as it will cause major lash backs and i=outrages in the modern society as thousands/millions of people use the internet to get a sense of escapism from the real world through the internet and therefore cause major issues between these people. On the other hand several audiences are seeing certain articles or videos that should not exist due to how gruesome they are or offensive therefore more restrictions need to be put online to stop this and reduce this becoming a reoccurring theme.

6) Do you think the internet should be regulated? Should the government try and control what we can access online?

I think the internet should not be regulated as it would cause huge outrages in the modern society and will take away peoples free will, while there are parts of the internet that are horrible and should not exist, with companies such as Youtube putting more restrictions to how much content is explicit that is a moderate amount of regulation.

Apply Gerbner's cultivation theory to new and digital media. Is the internet creating a fearful population? Are we becoming desensitised to online threats, trolling and abuse?

I agree to this at a certain extent as people who view gory content become much more used to seeing it, for example, movies in the past would not feature gore in which modern movies being viewed by that demographic find the content to be disturbing while the modern day audience is much more accustomed to viewing this content. Online troll is not seen as that big of the threat as they were seen as users are also able to censor this content so viewers cannot be affected as much as they used to.

Is heavy internet use something we should be worried about in society? How would you define 'heavy internet use'?

There are so many means of viewing the internet that I think that viewing educational videos are not bad to view in big consumption, but viewing videos relating to video games and movies is not very healthy for audiences, yet viewing the extreme amount of negative or graphic content can lead to negative impact on the audiences.
