Narrative Blog Task

1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium. 

Power - Within the TV Programme's first episode the actors are living their life going about their daily life as usual until the plot thickens as the face a disequilibrium halting their daily normal and creates their first problem.

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.



3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.

Barry Allen - The Flash 

Katniss Everden - The Hunger Games

James Bond - Spectre

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.

in several action films there tends to be a lovable hero facing a major villain and are forced to go against each other for whatever reason this leads to a major part of the movie having several action films for example in a 007 film such as Spectre.

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?


Enigma codes and action codes offer gratifications for audiences because it makes the audience asks questions because they want to know why the producer has done this and they want to know what happens next in the film. The definition of enigma codes is the control of how much we know and help hold our interest. It creates mystery during the narrative. This will force the audience to ask questions such as: What is going to happen next?. The definition of action codes is the events or actions in the story that are important in developing the narrative, e.g. a gun being cocked signifies that a violent scene will follow. This will crate suspense and mystery and also some may be sympathetic for the person being killed.     


7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:

  • Episodic narrative (the series):
A story is often resolved per episode so that audiences can jump onto watching the show wherever.
  • Overarching narrative (the serial)
This typically means the audience members must be a regular watcher to be able top keep up with the story line.
  • Mixed narrative
As given as an example friends  multiple conflicts are being talked about but are often all solved by the end of episode or few.
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative)
All narratives tell a different story revolving around the same group of people e.g Eastenders

8) How does the Fact sheet suggest adverts use narrative?  

Documentations structure their stories to create engaging narrative.
Broadcast news use narrative to convey clear points of narrative
Photographs and still images may often portray a chosen event to reinforce something and
